About The Department

The Physics Department of Vidyasagar College is more than 100 years old. While the department is well equipped to run the modern experiments it also has a unique stock of some of the heritage instruments from the bygone days. The department holds several seminars, workshops and other activities throughout the year to engage the young minds as well as to give them a flavour of the changes and challenges of modern science. There are eight faculty members in the department, most of whom are engaged in research and publish teaching/research articles in reputed journals.

History of Department

In 1907, Vidyasagar College was affiliated to I.Sc. standard. In 1910 Vidyasagar College was entitled for teaching upto B.Sc. standard. A few renowned teachers of Physics Department are :
Dr. Bimal Chandra Ghosh (1909-1941)
Prof. T. M. Mandal (1925-1959)
Prof. Haraprasad De (1926-1963)
Prof. Sudhirchandra Rakshit (1948-1983)
Prof. Chandicharan Banerjee (1949-1982)
Among the above Prof. Haraprasad De and Prof. Chandicharan Banerjee were involved in research.

Prof. Haraprasad De, a disciple of Prof. Debendra Mohan Basu, did some pioneering research on alpha particles. Prof. De was a faculty member of Vidyasagar College for a long time. He wrote Physics textbooks in Bengali for the advancement of learning Physics in vernacular.
