Welcome to Vidyasagar College, a prestigious institution that has been a symbol of academic excellence and cultural heritage since its inception in 1872. Founded by the great social reformer and scholar, Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the college has a long-standing tradition of nurturing intellectual curiosity and fostering holistic development of the students. Our rich history is not just a source of pride but also a guiding light that inspires us to uphold the institutional motto “Gyan, Tyag, Seva.”
The college, recognised by University Grants Commission and affiliated with Calcutta University, presently offers a diverse range of undergraduate programs in 21 departments including nine in arts and humanities and twelve in science, alongside two postgraduate courses in Geography and Zoology. Our dedicated team comprises 75 full-time faculty members, 65 state-aided college teachers, and 41 non-teaching staff in office, departments and library, all committed to fostering an enriching educational environment. The college library boasts an extensive collection of 48,000 books and an archive of old records, providing invaluable resources for our students. Additionally, there is a well-equipped computer training centre in our main campus.
Regular teaching and learning, continuous assessment and active mentor -mentee system, are the strength of the college which have been reflected in our commendable success rate, with several rank holders in various university-level examinations. Our teachers are actively engaged in research and innovation, thus creating an enriching educational environment for our students. Departments organize seminars on core and supplementary areas and offer a range of value-added courses, both intradisciplinary and transdisciplinary, to provide students with an extra edge in their future studies.
While many of our undergraduate students go on to pursue higher studies at prestigious institutions and universities in India and abroad, our college also has a dedicated Placement and Career Advancement Cell. This cell provides opportunities for students who wish to find job opportunities, facilitating on-campus and off-campus interviews with renowned organizations to ensure a smooth transition into professional life.
The college prioritizes the health and wellbeing of its students, providing on-campus facilities including a canteen, a fully-equipped gym with a dedicated trainer, and a part-time doctor for consultations. In our commitment to sustainability, we have implemented several green campus initiatives, including the installation of solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system.
We believe in the importance of connecting with the community and making a positive impact beyond the campus. We have a vibrant NSS unit. Our students have organized blood donation camps, plantation of trees and distributed clothing to underprivileged individuals, fostering a spirit of community service and honouring our founder’s legacy.
