The glorious history of Education in Bengal during 19th century, is not only remarkable, but also the pioneer of the educational system of whole India. Vidyasagar College played a major role in this sector. Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar set up this institution where liberal arts were taught along the lines that the great soul prescribed for the all round development and wellbeing of the young individuals who entered the portals of learning here.
In 1872, when the institution was established by the iron personality Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, Department of Sanskrit started the journey with immense power of knowledge. Nabin Chandra Vidyaratna, Tarakumar Kaviratna, Kalikrishna Bhattacharya, Saradaranjan Ray, Rajendranath Vidyabhusan, Amulyacharan Vidyabhusan, Durgasaran Chakraborty, Radharaman Bhattacharya and other renowned scholars were attached to this department as faculty members (Dr. Samiran Chakraborty, Former Professor RBU, Dr. Mrinalkanti Ganguly, Former Professor, CU, Dr, Subuddhicharan Goswami, Former Professor, RBU, Dr. Satyanarayan Chakraborty, Former Professor, RBU) and under their valuable guidance the students of this department reached to the top positions in the University examinations. In the year 1887, the results of the B.A. and F.A. of the Calcutta University have been published “……...The Metropolitan Institution (Vidyasagar College) heads the list in Sanskrit” (Hindu Patriot, 23/05/1887). Lalit Kumar Bandyopadhyay awarded Eashan Scholarship ( stood first among all Honours Subjects) as he was the only student who became First Class First in Sanskrit and also passed in First Class Honours in another subject. He also received Radhakanta Gold Medal in 1887. Later, Gopal Chandra Mishra, one of the famous students of this department, also awarded as Eashan Scholar in 1974. Dr. Gopal Chandra Mishra, Former Professor and Dean of Rabindra Bharati University and Former Vice-chancellor of Gaurbanga University, has served this department as speaker and invited lecturer. One of the alumnus of this department is Dr. Taraknath Adhikari who is also renowned scholar and Professor in the Department of Sanskrit, Rabindra Bharati University.
The Department is always trying to reach the top with the inspiration of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, the eminent Sanskrit scholar. This Department is the first who arranged the National Seminar and Workshop along with MHRD, New Delhi. Numbers of renowned Professors from different Universities have enriched the department with their valuable lectures and advices. The Department has pride for the achievement of the students.
