About The Department

The glorious history of Education in Bengal during 19th century, is not only remarkable, but also the pioneer of the educational system of whole India. Vidyasagar College played a major role in this sector. Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar set up this institution where liberal arts were taught along the lines that the great soul prescribed for the all round development and wellbeing of the young individuals who entered the portals of learning here.

In 1872, when the institution was established by the iron personality Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, Department of Sanskrit started the journey with immense power of knowledge. Nabin Chandra Vidyaratna, Tarakumar Kaviratna, Kalikrishna Bhattacharya, Saradaranjan Ray, Rajendranath Vidyabhusan, Amulyacharan Vidyabhusan, Durgasaran Chakraborty, Radharaman Bhattacharya and other renowned scholars were attached to this department as faculty members (Dr. Samiran Chakraborty, Former Professor RBU, Dr. Mrinalkanti Ganguly, Former Professor, CU, Dr, Subuddhicharan Goswami, Former Professor, RBU, Dr. Satyanarayan Chakraborty, Former Professor, RBU) and under their valuable guidance the students of this department reached to the top positions in the University examinations.
