The department is well known for its excellent academic record for the past few decades. Many of our alumni are officiating in high positions in academia and research institutions with national and international repute. Cooperation from all segments and cordial relationships among teaching, non-teaching, and students are the valuable assets of the department. Three faculty members of this department have already enlisted themselves as independent PhD supervisors and joint/co-supervisors, and research scholars are working under their supervision to pursue PhDs. Thirteen students have been registered/enrolled for PhDs in various departments (like Physiology, Microbiology, etc.) at the University of Calcutta. Four students have been awarded PhDs from the Department of Physiology, University of Calcutta, and another one is going to be awarded a PhD from the Department of Biological Sciences, Aliah University, Kolkata, shortly. Three faculty members are also actively engaged in postgraduate teaching in various institutions of well-repute. The department has also been awarded DST-major, Government of India, and DST major, Government of West Bengal & UGC-minor, Government of India project grants. The department has research collaborations with different state, national, and international academic/research institutions, like the University of Calcutta, Sambalpur University, Indian Association for The Cultivation of Science, Kolkata (IACS), and Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB), Centurion University of Technology and Management, University of Alberta etc.
Physiology was introduced in the degree course in the year 1956 under the leadership of the late Dr. Satinath Sen, who served as the head of the department for more than three decades. However, the study of physiology at honours level started at Vidyasagar College in 1998. The department has a history of 68 years of UG teaching and frontiers in research. Currently, the department is offering physiology honours, major, and minor courses at the UG level.
