About The Department


The department of Philosophy, Vidyasagar College is more than 150 years old. Currently, the department has four faculty members who are actively engaged in research alongside teaching. The faculty members have contributed to research both at national and international platform. The department organises lectures, seminars, Students’ debate, Alumni Meet which keep the academic atmosphere vibrant and establish a strong bond among fellow students.

History of Department

The glorious journey of the Department of Philosophy, then known as the Department of Mental and Moral Science began in 1872, the same year the College was founded. The College was then called the METROPOLITAN INSTITUTION. The College was affiliated up to the B.A. standard in 1879. The first honours graduate, Jogendra Kumar Sinha, passed out in 1885; the honours course might have started from early 1880s.
