About The Department


The Department of Geography of Vidyasagar College is one of the most prestigious and top ranking departments among the colleges under the University of Calcutta. It offers both the undergraduate and post graduate courses in Geography under the University of Calcutta. With a capacity of approximate 60 students per semester (in both UG and PG section) the department is noted for its good academic records with more than 90% students securing first classes and pursuing higher studies. The departmental laboratory is well equipped with GIS lab, seminar library as well as a research lab where active research works are being carried out by the scholars.

History of Department

The department had a glorious history. The intermediate courses in Geography started from 1940-41, shortly after the introduction of Geography as a subject in the University in 1939. The undergraduate courses commenced from 1947 and the department started honours courses from 1959 under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. Many eminent persons served as teachers of this department, the names of Dharanidhar Sen, Dr. Sudhir Mohan Ghosh, Dr. Shibram Bhattacharyya, Prof Sunil Kumar Munshi, Prof. Nilotpal Shyam, Prof. Ramendra Kumar Das and Prof. Mukul Kumar Basu deserve special mention. The U.G departmental seminar library started in 1970 and is furnished with valuable books, handbooks census reports etc. The Post Graduate courses started here in 2009 and is still running with all its pride with a high intake capacity of 60 students per semester.

Departmental Library

The departmental library was set up in 1970, and is furnished with a large number of books in both English and Bengali, journals and handbooks. The department issues books to the students twice a week catering to their needs and also facilitates reading inside the department.

The Departmental Library housed at Sankar Ghosh Lane campus of the college, serves as a valuable resource center for students and faculty. It offers a comprehensive collection of textbooks and reference books, which can be issued for further study. Notably, the library houses a unique collection of old map books, district statistical handbooks, and census reports, providing valuable insights into geographical trends and historical data. This library supports academic pursuits and research endeavors within the department.
