The department of Food & Nutrition, Vidyasagar College started its academic endeavour since 2010. The primary objective of the department is to provide UG education to students in Food & Nutrition under University of Calcutta. The department focuses on providing quality education in concerned fields. Since its inception the department provides qualified and highly dedicated teachers, trained laboratory staffs, well equipped laboratories, and departmental library for the benefit of the students. The curriculum of the department is designed in such a manner that students get career opportunities in reputed educational institutes, health sectors and food industries.
For the benefit of students, the department organises seminars/conference, workshops, and lectures on regular basis by distinguished people working in the field of nutrition and food technology or in collaboration with organisations related to these fields. Every year in the month of September the department observes Nutrition Month with wholehearted participation of its students and teachers. The department also arranges inter departmental extempore competition, poster competition, quiz competition. The academic excellence of the department is achieved through not only UG coursework but also with arranging internship/training in hospitals, food industries and related organisations, community health centre visits etc.
Since the beginning the department has provided a number of UG rank holders under University of Calcutta and many of departmental ex- students are well placed in different prestigious institutions.

The departmental library consists of all the books required for the department. There are seventy books in the library among which Peventive and Social Medicine by Park, Ganong’s Medical Physiology, Harper’s Biochemistry, Krause’s Food & Nutrition Therapy, West & Todd’s Textbook of Biochemistry, Pelzar’s Microbiology, William’s Therapeutic Nutrition are of special mention.
