Summary: Dr. Nikhil Sur delivered a lecture on the experience of Bengal and the Bengalis during the famine of 1943. The rumour of the Japanese invasion on Calcutta scared the inhabitants of the city and they fled to neighbouring regions. He explained how the British were not at all prepared to counter the Japanese attack (if it happened) though they never admitted it officially. The famine situation was aggravated due to the presence of foreign soldiers in Calcutta. He poignantly described the detail manipulation of the British to cover up their inadequacy to protect Calcutta.
His deliberation was lucid and captivating. The seminar ended with an interactive session with the audience.
