The Department of Physics, Vidyasagar College, organized a programme titled "Roots and Reasons" on 08.06.2026 in observance of World Environment Awareness Week. The programme commenced at 11:30 a.m. and was attended by the Principal, the IQAC Coordinator, teachers, and students from various departments of the college, with a total participation of around 30 attendees.
The first event of the programme was an open debate on the motion, "Practical Development is Impossible Without Environmental Sacrifice." The debate proved to be highly engaging and competitive, with participants presenting thoughtful arguments both in favour of and against the motion. The discussion became so stimulating that even the judges (Dr. Ishita Chakravarty, Dr. Nirmalendu Mukhoti, Dr. Bhaswati Chatterjee) actively interacted with the participants, enriching the overall deliberation and encouraging deeper reflection on the subject.
The second event was a rather unconventional quiz competition devoted exclusively to environmental issues and awareness. The quiz challenged participants with a wide range of questions related to environmental science, sustainability, conservation, and contemporary ecological concerns, making it both informative and intellectually stimulating.
The programme concluded with a prize distribution ceremony recognizing the achievements of the winners and participants. In her concluding remarks, Dr. Sanchari Goswami, Department of Physics, highlighted the importance of environmental awareness and responsible citizenship in addressing contemporary environmental and social challenges.
A special mention must be made of the students of the Department of Physics (1st & 2nd year), whose outstanding management, coordination, and hosting contributed significantly to the smooth and successful conduct of the program.
The event raised awareness and sparked meaningful discussions on environmental issues, reflecting the Department's commitment to promoting environmental consciousness among the academic community.
