The founding of Metropolitan College in 1872, later named as Vidyasagar College in 1917, was a true representation of nationalist sprit of the great founder of the college, Pundit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar.
Teaching Chemistry at Metropolitan College started at 1885, almost from inception of the college and in those days, Chemistry was taught as a part of ‘Material and Moral Science’. In 1908, the College got permission for starting Chemistry as one of the subjects in F.A. class, from University of Calcutta. Then in 1910, Chemistry was introduced in B.A. class. Honours course in Chemistry as a Science subject started in June, 1926. In 1934, after almost nine years of unrelenting labour of both teachers and students, the Department was able to produce the first class I Honours Graduate, Amiya Kumar Mitra and since then, the Department gave birth to a galaxy of notable persons who played vital roles in different spheres of national life for regeneration of India and education of the youth.
