About The Department

Department of Biochemistry aims to train the Undergraduate students to excel in higher studies and in biological research. We motivate our students to serve the society in medical research, drug designing, diagnosis of diseases, mechanism of action of various microorganisms. Every year a good number of students frame their career in biological research in IITs, IISC, TIFR CCMB, ISI, SINP, IICB, IACS as well as various prestigious universities of US and Europe.

History of Department

Department of Biochemistry was established in the year 2007 with a major initiative taken up by the faculties of Department of Chemistry, Vidyasagar College and the Governing body. Initially the faculties of Chemistry Department reached out their hands of cooperation to teach the students of the budding Department.

Dr. Subarna Gupta joined the Department as HOD and is still serving her duty as HOD. Initially only four students were admitted in 2007 and all of them have achieved their Ph D degrees. Dr Anirban Roy of the first batch, stood 2 nd in the University and is now pursuing his Post Doctoral Researchship in Houston University and presently working as Research Assistant Professor in the same university. The University of Calcutta has increased the student strength upto 35 and we are getting good number of students each year.

Right now, the Department has four faculty members- Dr. Subarna Gupta, Dr. Purba Konar, Dr. Rozi Ghosh and Dr. Jayeeta Bardhan Dasgupta. The faculty members are dedicated and serving their level best not only to excel the students in the field of education but also as a good human being who will serve the society and the nation. The Department is very fortunate that every year we get intelligent, hardworking and motivated students and also hope for the same in future. Initially the Department started with one laboratory and one teacher’s room.

Within one year we got another laboratory. All the instruments and chemicals required to perform the experiments according to the syllabus were purchased by the approval from the Governing body of the College. The Department became self sufficient within two years and is serving as University Centre for Undergraduate Practical Examination from 2010 onwards.
